Is Botox Cosmetic a Killer?

In February 2008, the FDA issued a warning that Botox Cosmetic (botulinum toxin type A) and its competitor, Myobloc (toxin type B) have been linked to adverse reactions ranging from botulism symptoms requiring hospitalization to death.

In summary:

• Botulinum toxin-related deaths have been linked to significantly higher dosages than are used for facial wrinkles;

• Botulism cases in patients treated for wrinkles were due to overdoses of unlicensed toxins;

• Not that you would want to get it, but botulism is treatable;

• Know the symptoms and treatment of botulism;

• It is not known if botulinum toxin can migrate to the human brain.
