As you pack away all the beach gear until next summer, be sure to set the sunscreen aside. For one thing, it may not be effective nine months from now, so use it now; but more importantly, your skin needs protection from the sun’s UV rays all year round.
Sun damage is cumulative. Every little bit counts. Even if you’re only exposed to the sun’s rays as you dash from the store to the car or sit near a sunny window, you’re adding to the damage already done. The good news is that as soon as you start using sunscreen properly and consistently, you stop adding to the damage. Further, since the skin is no longer stressed trying to fight off UV rays, it is able to dedicate resources to reversing some of the accumulated damage.
And now there’s even more good news, a more powerful longer lasting sunscreen ingredient – Helioplex. Dr. Allan Oseroff, dermatology chair at both the Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the University at Buffalo calls Helioplex the most important advance in sun protection in 20 years.
Existing sunscreens effectively block UVB rays, but their UVA protection breaks down in less than two hours. UVA rays are the most dangerous because they penetrate deep into the skin’s layers and may cause cancer. Helioplex blocks UVA rays for twice as long as anything that has come before.
