Fat in Your Diet

Just as there have been new advances in the development of cosmetics, researchers are constantly finding that some long held beliefs are not necessarily true when put to the test.

For example, in February 2006, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that a low-fat diet does not lower a women’s risk for breast or colon cancer, heart attacks or stroke.

As a matter of fact, those on a low-fat diet had the same incidence of these diseases as those on a diet whose fat content was uncontrolled.

Dr. Jules Hirsch, Physican in Chief Emeritus at Rockefeller University, who has spent his career studying the effect of diet on weight and health called the study “revolutionary.” He stated that “They (the studies) should put a stop to this era of thinking that we have all the information we need to change the whole national diet and make everybody healthy.”

Cyndi at Busy Family Meals gives us Two Weeks of Dinner Menus and recipes to streamline our meal planning. And they sound delicious!

Jean at Ageless Beautyshares some delicious and nutritious Mediterranean-style Recipes.

Mary Emma, at Home Biz Notes, tell how you can develop a Home-based Business around Favorite Family Recipes.

There are other wonderful things you can do to preserve those precious family recipes too.

My sister Eileen at The Artful Crafter once created small three-ring photo binders of family favorites and gave them as Christmas gifts. Everyone loved them and now we all have copies of Grammy’s babka, Eileen’s peiorogis, Mom’s chicken in sour cream. Yum!

Last year, she did a Family Reunion Dinner Menu for a traditional Polish Easter feast. The menu (with whose recipe each was) on one side and a selection of family photos on the other. People were so surprised. Some of the photos had not been seen by all before. Lots of laughs and tears. It was a great day.

So many family memories can be shared through food. Speaking of which, create some family memories today.

Happy Mother's Day!

Foodie Bloggers Roundup #1

Today marks the launch of a column which I’m very excited about. It was Cyndi Lavin’s idea – a weekly roundup of links to other blogs which talk about good healthy food. This will provide access to a broader range of information for all of our readers.

Since I blog for Ageless Beauty every other day, I will publish my Foodie Bloggers Roundup on Sunday or Monday.

Please meet some of my food-freak-friends. We love to prepare good healthy food for our families … and we loooove to eat it!

This week:

Cyndi at Busy Family Meals shares a delicious quick one-pan recipe for Baked Fresh Trout (or fish of your choice). I’m a fan of baked fish because I don’t like the messy spatter or oily smell of pan-frying. If you use butter-flavored spray or a butter substitute, this dish is even very heart-healthy. If you use Cyndi’s recipe, please leave her a comment. I did!

Sandy at the
All Holiday Café (Don’t you just love the blog title?) shows how to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a festive - and tasty - dip depicting the Mexican flag. This is so cool for me because I’m in Mexico as I write this blog, listening to the “cohetes” (noisy fireworks or bottle rockets) going off every few minutes.

Jean (that’s me!) gives some delicious tips to Incorporate More Fiber and Whole Grains into Your Diet.

When Mary Emma, at Quilting & Patchwork, wrote about the square dancing and quilting bees of her youth, she also thought of recipes served on these occasions. Her Quilting Bee Food Reminiscences brought to mind favorite foods of my childhood too.

Gee wouldn’t that be fun to blog about and maybe even update our childhood family favorites for what we now know about healthful eating? What do you say girls?

Got Fiber?

One of my favorite websites, Hungry Girl, offers tons of suggestions for healthy eating, including getting more whole grains into your diet. I subscribe to the free HG newsletter. It’s an easy daily read – fun, funky and chock full of recipe swaps and food facts.

Hungry Girl recommends a lot of Fiber One products and comes up with really clever ways to use them and make them even better. Fiber One can be used to coat chicken or fish. It makes cereal bars, trail mix, smoothies and stuffings.

I think the following is one of the best Fiber One tips for when you’re craving a sweet dessert. HG suggests it can be applied to any cake or muffin mix.

The Fiber One Muffin Mix box directions call for the addition of eggs, milk and oil. Hungry Girl substitutes 1 cup canned pumpkin, 1 cup water, and 1/2 cup Egg Beaters (or egg whites or some other fat-free liquid egg substitute). It even sounds yummy

If you’d like to eat more whole grain products as well as add more fiber to your diet, check out the Fiber One family of products. As an example, Original Fiber One cereal lists whole grain wheat as the second ingredient. In addition, it contains wheat and corn bran for added fiber. A one-half cup serving contains 57% DV of fiber!
