Sun Screens and Wrinkles

As you age, your skin undergoes a series of changes. Collagen and elastin, the substances that keep your skin smooth and young looking, break down leading to the droopy, flabby skin that everyone encounters as they get older.

While your genetic background has some bearing on how soon and how much this breakdown will make itself visible, the single biggest cause of skin damage is exposure to the sun, especially those sunburns you suffered as a child.

No matter what your age, if you want to keep a youthful appearance, use good broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 15. Apply the sunscreen liberally, and reapply it every two hours when out in the sun or after going swimming. Try to avoid the sun at the hottest parts of the day and when not sunbathing, wear clothing and a hat to shield your skin from the sun.

Do your children or grandchildren a big favor and make sure they are protected when they go out. I’ve read articles that estimate that 85% or so of the sun damage we sustain occurs within our first 14 years of life.
