One Down, Two to Go: Jean’s Eye Shadow Pick

Back in August (1, 3, and 31) and September (14, 16, 18 and 20), I received some antiaging makeup tips and reviews from Becky, one of our regular readers. They were so good, I published them all and tried out some of Becky’s picks myself.



We are now both confirmed users of Peter Thomas Roth UnWrinkle, Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme foundation and Neutrogena Advanced Solutions Lip Rejuvenating cream.



Becky closed her last letter with, “In addition to a nice lipstick, I'm also looking for an eye shadow that doesn't settle in the cracks and that doesn't shine; and a natural looking blush.” I’ve been looking ever since and think I have finally found the perfect eye shadow for Age Warriors.



Maybelline Shadow Stylist is in loose powder form and comes in a little bottle with built-in sponge applicator. The loose powder goes on so easily you don’t have to rub and scrub the delicate eyelid skin. It comes in a nice range of colors including muted shades that are best for women “of a certain age”.



I chose Elegant Pearl and Vintage Champagne, which I would describe as a pale yellow and a pale dusky rose respectively. Shadow Stylist does have a bit of shimmer but just enough to make your eyes sparkle. The powder does not settle in the cracks. It stays just where you applied it all day long. How did they do that?

Lipsticks I'm having a problem with. But I think I'm looking for a miracle - I want something that makes your lips look full, smooth, and moist ... and that also lasts all day! So it's probably no surprise I haven't found one yet! I have found a lip treatment, however, that works miracles – Neutrogena Advanced Solutions Lip Rejuvenating treatment (costs about $17).



You're supposed to use twice a day but it makes your lips so moist it's hard to get a lip-liner to stay on, so I only use it at night. Within a week of using just at night, I noticed more fullness in my lips and what's even better, I noticed a deeper color (my lips had faded so much that you could barely see them anymore!). I don't really have a problem with wrinkling in my lips, so can't vouch for it's effectiveness in that area.



In addition to a nice lipstick, I'm also looking for an eye shadow that doesn't settle in the cracks and that doesn't shine; and a natural looking blush. In addition to finding good antiaging products, it would also be beneficial to hear about application techniques for mature skin. I'm sure there are ways to apply shadows, liners, and blushes that lift and camouflage, but it's hard to find someone who knows.

Becky’s Antiaging Face Powder Pick

I'm 55, and for the last couple of years I've tried to stay away from powders. However, I do like the finished look of a loose powder and it certainly "sets" your liquid foundation to make it last longer. I spent a lot of time (and money!) looking for a nice, finely milled loose powder that would accomplish what I wanted without settling into the cracks & crevices, or making your face look dull and lifeless!



Based on some reviews, blogs, etc. on the Internet, I finally tried Prescriptives Magic Liquid Powder. This truly is magic! It is a dry powder but when you dust it on your face it feels like you just used a very cooling spritzer. It sets your foundation (makes it last hours longer); your face looks very "finished" and has a very subtle glow (glow ... not shine).



It diffuses light so it consequently camouflages fine lines and pores. It too has a hefty price tag - around $35 for 1.2 oz., however, a very very little goes a very long way so it is definitely worth the cost. I also dust it on my neck and décolletage area.



Another plus, it is truly translucent – doesn't change your foundation shade in the least. It also comes in a red neutralizer formula as well as a deep translucent formula for deeper skin tones. A list of ingredients is on the box, however, it is white lettering on a shiny silver background and these old eyes just can't read most of it!

More AntiAging Makeup Picks from Becky

Picking up where we left off Wednesday with Becky's foundation picks …



I then tried the Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme foundation (saved it for last because of the hefty price tag - $35 for 1 oz; but a little goes a long way especially with a foundation brush). The list of ingredients is way too long to put here (they don't list their ingredients on their website but they do on the boxes the products come in) but I'll list a few I recognize as good anti-aging treatments and/or "smoke and mirrors" - acetyl glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, caffeine, acetyl hexapeptide-3, palmitoyl oligopeptide, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 and hydrolyzed wheat protein. This product looks fantastic and really does minimize the look of wrinkles.



And I just found out that in September they will be coming out with this same formula in a compact form (I assume it will be similar to the Mary Kay cream to powder foundations and by the way, I too sold Mary Kay at one time!).



This is the foundation I stuck with - a little expensive but while the Cover Girl product does minimize the look of wrinkles, pores, and gives a nice glow, the Estee Lauder does all this and also gives a firmer, more lifted look, which was primarily what I was looking for - just enough added benefit to make it worth the price for me.

Reader Submission: Becky’s Antiaging Makeup Picks

Last month Becky, one of our regular readers, suggested we add a section on antiaging makeup to Ageless Beauty. Great idea! I asked if she had any makeup products she could recommend since she had done such a good job choosing her antiaging skin care routine. Here’s Becky’s reply.



Well, I have found a few miracle products.



Foundations: I spent a ton of money looking for a good foundation for a "mature" face – one that would camouflage the wrinkles and sagging, but would still be light enough for an older skin. Then about six months ago I read a Good Housekeeping review of lifting/firming foundations that said the two that really did what they said were Cover Girl Advanced Radiance Restorative and Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme. I tried both and here's what I found:



The Cover Girl does look very nice (especially for the price) – gives your face a very youthful glow. I don't have the ingredient list but it's made in conjunction with Olay and contains its "glucosamine complex"; you need to be careful with shades however - the 130 series tends to be on the yellow side and if your base color is yellow, like mine, it makes you really really yellow, but the 120 series seems to be okay. This costs about $10 for just under an ounce.

What About Makeup for us “Age Warriors”?

This is such a fabulous website for all things "anti-aging", however, one addition that would be nice would be reviews/suggestions/etc. for cosmetics for us "age warriors"! I realize this would be very time consuming, but would very nice (and very appreciated!) if you could fit it in!

Becky, thank you! I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of that before. Maybe because we “girls” have been using makeup practically all our lives, I figured what more could I tell people. But the fact is that many companies are now coming out with cosmetics specifically designed for aging skin.

There are makeup products that provide better camouflage using reflective particles and hints of color to offset ruddiness. There are lip plumpers to temporarily make thin lips fuller again. There are even makeup products that contain some of the true age-reversing ingredients.

I’ll start with what I use myself and go from there. Do you have any makeup products you could recommend? You did such a good job choosing your anti-aging skin care routine; my guess is that you do.

Eyebrow Pencils for Blondes

Hi,



I’ve been blonde all my life and, even though my blonde hair now comes from a bottle, the color just suits me. The problem I have is finding blonde eyebrow pencils. The lightest I usually see are medium brown (and believe me, I am always searching).



I know the color can’t be too light or it won’t show. On the other hand, I know my eyebrow color is supposed to match my hair color – more or less. Are there any lighter blonde eyebrow pencils available anywhere?

Top Ten Make-up Tips for Ageless Beauty

1. Revlon Colorstay Overtime Lipstick - long-lasting and non-drying. I put it on in the morning and am set for the day – honestly, it’s that good!



2. Dior Sculpt Line-Smoothing Lifting Makeup SPF 20 – I love this foundation as well as #3. Dior suits my very dry skin a bit better and I like the fact that it has SPF 20 though it costs a little more.



3. Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme SPF 15 – This was one of Becky’s finds. I agree with her that it is excellent and has wonderful anti-aging ingredients.



4. Ear Lift Tape - If you have a torn ear lobe (or two), you'll love these little dots of surgical tape that stick on the back of the torn lobe(s). You put on your earring at the top of the piercing which stretched or tore and go right through the tape. The tape holds the earring up where you want it to be and prevents any further stretching. I wouldn't wear earrings without these.



5. Trind Natural Nail Repair - This is the only product I found that restored my nails after 20 years of wearing acrylics.

Make-up Tips for Ageless Beauty

Last September, one of our readers started a dialogue which continues to this day and is forming the base of a new segment of our website, Ageless Beauty. Here’s what Becky wrote.

Becky submitted some of her faves, which we then tested. She was in search of the perfect long-lasting lipstick which wasn’t drying. We think we found it! As well, we have received suggestions and tips from other readers and added several of our own.



So, we are at the point where we want to post a list of our top anti-aging makeup picks, as we have for anti-cellulite products, anti-aging skin care and (more) affordable anti-aging skin care.



Since this is a work in process, I thought it would be nice to give my blog readers a sneak preview.

Putting on My Face – Jean Tells All

Right now, this is what I use to “put on my face” each day.



1. Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme Ultra Firming Makeup – Shade 2C.



2. Avon Cover All stick – Medium for any areas that need extra coverage and White for the inner corner of my eyes.



3. Maybelline Shadow Stylist powder shadow – Vintage Champagne or Elegant Pearl.



4. Brown eyebrow pencil – sorry I don’t know the brand because it’s a (very old) refillable pencil that I just love and the name has worn off. When I run out of refills, I guess I’m gonna be forced to switch!



5. Nat Robbins Colorfrost Lip liners – either Mahogany or Pink Gold. These are pretty old too and are down to stubs. Sure hope I can find them again.



6. Arbonne Eye Liner in Mermaid (not quite navy but a deep

blue).



7. Avon Daring Curves Mascara black. I’m always looking for more oomph for my lashes, so I’ve tried many of the two-part mascaras and even gave Maybelline Great Lash another whirl after many years away. But I keep coming back to Daring Curves. It goes on without clumping, doesn’t flake off or smudge, yet is easy to remove (unlike Great Lash). Plus it really does make the lashes curl up as it dries.



8. Avon ColorTrend eye shadow rollette in Frost to highlight my brow bones.



9. Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lipcolor in Eternally Tan or Endless Spice. I love this stuff. It really has staying power. I’ve converted most of my girlfriends.



10. Marcella Borghese Blush Milano Peach Biscotti.
