HA w/BioCell Collagen II from BioCell Technologies

I received a reader comment on my view of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) supplementation (see my blog for May 1). She specifically asked for my opinion on HA w/BioCell Collagen II from BioCell Technologies. Since the previous article addressed HA, I’ll just talk about Collagen II supplementation here.

Again quoting Dr. Ray Sanhelian, M.D., “In the past few years several companies have started selling collagen supplements. There’s hardly any research evaluating the role of collagen supplements in human health, and hence, at this time, claims made regarding collagen capsules cannot be endorsed.”

As I wrote earlier, Dr. Sanhelian is widely recognized as a moderate voice in the evaluation of natural supplements. At the other extreme, I found articles promoting Collagen II supplementation written by James South, M.A.

James South is a biochemist and prominent proponent of supplementation for health and anti-aging. He is a prolific author and frequent talk show guest. He also practices what he preaches and has experimented on himself for over 30 years.

Only you can decide where you want to be on the spectrum. Would you like to see some peer-reviewed published research before using a new supplement formula or are you comfortable, like James South, being a human guinea pig?

Oral Hyaluronic Acid for Skin Antiaging

Last Monday I told you about a Marie Claire article on oral supplements for skin antiaging. Marie Claire recommended antioxidants, B vitamins, Omega 3 and 6 Essential Fatty Acids, Hyaluronic Acid and probiotics. I was surprised to see Hyaluronic Acid (HA) supplements on the list and have since researched it.

An ABC News special titled "The Village of Long Life: Could Hyaluronic Acid be an Anti-Aging Remedy?” reported on the Japanese village of Yuzuri Hara, two hours outside of Tokyo, where people who follow the unique traditional diet high in HA routinely live active and healthy lives into their 90s and beyond.

However, Dr. Ray Sanhelian, a physician widely recognized as a moderate voice in the evaluation of natural supplements, has this to say about HA supplementation, “Hyaluronic acid oral supplements are promoted for arthritis and many other conditions including skin health. I have not come across any human trials with an oral form of hyaluronic acid for joint or skin health.” At this point, he is suspending judgement on whether HA supplements can keep your skin young and moist.

But don’t despair. A component of HA
has been shown to have the very benefits recently attributed to HA.

Here is more about
hyaluronic acid.
