As the nurse noticed me tensing with the pain, she offered me a small foam ball to squeeze. The doctor told me to breathe deeply. I learned that there is a definite rhythm to maximize the pain relief using these techniques. Inhale deeply. Squeeze the ball tightly and exhale with the pain. It really helped. Kind of like mini-Lamaze, I guess.

I arrived at 11:00 and was taken right into the doctor’s office. He looked closely at my face and the condition of my skin. Then he explained the procedure in detail and said he would do 600 pulses which would include treatment of the forehead, crow’s feet area, mid-face, around the mouth, along the jaw line and the upper neck (in front). He gave me an anti-inflammatory pill to place under my tongue.

If I had a face lift today, you may wonder how I am able to sit at the computer and type up this blog. I look pretty much as I did when I got up this morning and I feel fine. After the procedure, my husband and I went to a restaurant for a nice lunch.

As the market waits with bated breath for the scoop on Avon’s new product launch, ThermaFirm Face Lifting Cream, people are also puzzling over where in the world Avon got the idea for an anti-aging cream that purports to use “triple-sonic technology” to “form a 3-D matrix on your skin. The wave of the future. Unprecedented lifting. Pain-free.”The company claims the ultrasonic stressed yeast, hydrolyzed protein and other special ingredients: “stimulate collagen production; protect against collagen breakdown by inhibiting collagen-depleting enzymes; and stimulate fibronectin, which helps link the dermal fibers together.”Sounds to me like something out of an old Buck Rogers episode. But, as they say, truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. There actually is a face lifting procedure based on radio waves. It’s called Thermage; and believe it or not, Thermage received FDA approval in 2004.Thermage uses radio waves to heat the collagen beneath the skin. The resulting irritation stimulates the body to produce significant amounts of new collagen over the next three to six weeks. The improvement lasts up to two years. The Internet contains a wealth of information; but also a wealth of misinformation. One area of the Internet I find particularly susceptible to misinformation is web forums and user reviews posted on retail sites.
Anyone can put just about anything on these sites (as long as it’s not objectionable). Currently, there is no way to vet the information and separate fact from opinion – or bald-faced lie.
One particular example stands out in my mind. I was following a thread on a forum regarding the risks of Thermage – after which I issued this Thermage warning.
There were posters who reported devastating Thermage results and posters defending the safety of the procedure. The proponents were accused of being practitioners of Thermage trying to protect their livelihood.

The other day, my hubby looked at me closely and commented, “You know, your Thermage is still working. Your face looks younger every day.” I had Thermage last September. That’s almost nine months ago – long past when most people say the final results are clear.
Problem with my DH’s (dear hubby’s) observation is that it is just that – an observation – albeit from a credible source. I mean I don’t get such compliments often. More often it’s something like, “You’re wearing that to the party!?” Still a third party observation is better than a self report, which is what I get when I look in the mirror and think I see an ever-so-slight improvement.In addition, my Thermage results have been contaminated. After all, I haven’t been living in a bubble these past nine months. I’ve added new peptides to my skincare routine. I’ve added alpha lipoic acid to my daily supplement routine and just recently dropped the vitamin C.
See what I mean? How can I know how much of the improvement is due to the Thermage? Should I add back the high-potency vitamin C? That was one of the things my Thermage doctor recommended. Maybe it really helped.This is why, when I review new products or ingredients, I look for hard scientific data (as I described Tuesday). I had a Thermage “facelift” treatment last September. Even though the process was quite painful, I was (and am) pleased with the results. See my Thermage Journal here and before and after photos here.
However, as I continue to research the topic, I have concluded that I am one of the lucky ones. Too many patients have been less than satisfied. Many have allegedly suffered permanent disfigurement. Some have had multiple costly reconstructive procedures to undo the damage they allegedly suffered from Thermage.
As I try to parse through all of the forums and news reports with an objective eye, I can’t help but conclude that I should issue a caution to my readers.
In the wrong hands, Thermage can be dangerous to your health. If you don’t do your homework, you stand a pretty good chance of undergoing a procedure to improve your confidence and self esteem but ending up looking older or, worse yet, deformed and in long-lasting pain.
