Pillow Talk!

Stumbled upon this image over here, and just fell in love with the colors and the textures!
The wool, the fur, the mirror embroidered fabric...

Do you change your pillow covers as the seasons change? For a pop of color? Or not at all??

LOVE this image...
All the different materials used, could easily make the space look super busy, but as you can see it's just the right mix. What can I say... This is how you make rust look chic! Image from the home of Canadian designer Martha Sturdy. Rumor has it a big design magazine just did a shoot at Martha's private island home in Vancouver, can't wait to see more!!

Have a great weekend,

A Dash of Mocha

Welcome to my home... I wish!!*
Does this look welcoming or what? Follow me, and we will explore together, this is a Swedish home bathed in light and grounded by wonderful accents.

To me, this qualifies as White Done Right!! These light filled white rooms where the light just bathes the interior, have been grounded beautifully with a Dash of Mocha.

Looking a little closer at this home, a lot of texture is revealed. The Moroccan wedding blanket on the big chair, the different cushions, the kilim on the floor, the woven baskets, the little Asian lantern in the windowsill... Great mix!

A view through french doors reveal yet another white space just beyond...

Close-up of an eclectic collection of items; nothing "goes" together, yet it all works in creating a personal story!

So simple and beautiful!
Not only a Dash of Mocha, but also a Pinch of Mint....

What do you think? Does all the white scare you?? I like the dark brown accents, and I also really like the mint green country cabinet in the last image, reminds me of one I saw at a friends house, purchased in The Hampton's... She uses hers as a bar and storage for glassware.

* For the record; This is NOT my home.

My morning ritual would be enhanced by this pretty bathroom, what do you think? Love the many plants, like the toothbrush cup... How about the pretty "french" items; the soap(s) and the mirror.

Messy or not? Too many textures or just enough?
Pretty for sure!

Have a great start to your day!

Books I am bringing back...

... well, actually, that statement is not entirely true.
For the very first time, there have been absolutely NO Danish Design books to swoon over, not even a single one to buy, just so that I could say I found something of interest! Sadly!!

However, the Norwegian furniture brand Slettvoll, have just released an inspirational interior design book called "Velkommen Hjem" (Welcome Home). While this book is not yet in my possession (I am confident my Norwegian readers are familiar?) below - for the rest of us - are a few interior shots to drool over :).

Happy Fall Weekend!

Today we went shopping... window shopping that is (read; I didn't buy anything... yet!). I am so excited to see all the new goods in the stores. I am feeling my way, touching everything like a little child, and jumping for joy when I find something really cool!

I picked up a few magazine, Interior Design as well as Fashion magazines, just so I can be fully "prepared" for when I do decide to shop a little, trying to cover all the angles ;)  In the new Mad & Bolig  a few accessories caught my eye, and they were all listed as items from Brandts Indoor.... I had to see more!!

While I am vaguely familiar with where the store is located (as it is close to my sisters house), I am now on a mission to visit in person!!!!!! What do you think?

Wanner come shopping with me?

N is for...

... well the obvious answer would be Northern Light :) but it also happens to be my first initial.

Further more, I got up SUPER early (read: pre-sunrise) to take a friend to the airport so she could go to New York City for work. So as you can see, this image is perfect for all the right reasons today!

Raw space, raw grace...

Kind of a cool space, no?

I am liking the simplicity a lot!! The clean white walls and painted rafters vs the raw unfinished look of the cement floor and unfinished wall. The large console table in the back with its asymmetric base, is just perfect and visually light enough for the space. The old beat up table and chairs lend just enough patina to the space, and the teal adds just the right amount of cool color to the otherwise monochromatic space... Do you like the lighting? I'm not sure I would have chosen all these different shapes and sizes, but I guess as a whole it works.

Have a wonderful day today!!

New on the virtual newsstand...

Why don't you sit down with a lovely Cafe au Lait, Latte or Cappuchino (or whatever comfort drink you like) and enjoy this new issue of Dabble Magazine? I am sure you will enjoy their travel section - I did - and their food section made me seriously hungry!!

My favorite feature was this article on Masterful Mixing where "nothing matches but it all goes together", which is my kind of decorating anyhow.

I pulled this image (above) as my favorite, not just because of the wonderful blues, but the layering of colors, textures and objects, makes for an interesting tableau. I like the leaning framed poster, against the mirror, makes everything a little less formal!

GREAT use of a small balcony, what more do you need?? A comfy chair, a plush pillow, somewhere to put up you feet. I like the stripe fabric; Not to cabana-ish, more in the direction of men's inspired fabric.

The framed artwork made me take a second look, perhaps they are Kerrie's? If you would like something similar for your walls, check out Driftwood Interior's Etsy shop.

I find all the blue and all the texture in this article just yummy, keeping the eye moving from item to item. One might argue not to use all these different shades, but for me it works, and it's exactly what makes it interesting; Masterful Mixing indeed.

New Blog Love

... Meet Anna-Malin of Helt Enkelt Hos Mig! This blog is quintessential Nordic design, Nordic living and the photography is DIVINE!

Anna-Malin shares her home with us, one of my favorite spots is in her kitchen where she collects cups and bowls. They are displayed so many different ways through the year, depending on the season... I TOTALLY get this obsession with the Tine K products, they are just the coolest!!

... Actually I am lucky to have a few of my own, but that will be a post for another day :)

How pretty is this little vignette? Hand picked Anemones, a tea light and a beautiful bowl, to me it doesn't get much better than this! Anne-Marlins photography is wonderful, she really understands how to capture that special Scandinavian light.
I encourage you to visit Helt Enkelt Hos Mig, I am sure you will enjoy the blog, and if you do not read Swedish, well then the translator button is your best friend :)

Go on... Go explore!!
Tell Anna-Marlin I sent you :)

PS. For all those of you who left me a comment on the first version of this post (before the blogger problem), I am sorry to say, they are all gone and nowhere to be found, so please know, it's not that I didn't post your comment.... Sorry!

I will rebuild :), but it might be a little while, in the meantime I leave you with a wonderful image from the home of Tine K, as a little teaser for all of you who didn't see yesterdays post.

Hope you have a wonderful start to the weekend, TGIF!!

Details

Something so sweet and girl-y about these two images... Almost like a secret look into private quarters!

Love the silvery textures and colors in the first image, and the golden brassy feel of the second image!

When you are not wearing your jewelery, do you display it? Do you hide it, or do you simply have so much that you have a designated drawer for your accessories??

Do you have a favorite image?? While I am more of a silvery, white gold, platinum kind of girl, I tend to like the golden image better.... hmmmm.... probably the teal that's drawing me in.

Birds eye view

As a reader of Northern Light, you already know I love a well designed room! Lots of white, a little black, a pop of color and I am happy. This room fits all the criteria... Do you like??

What do you think of the wallpaper in the office upstairs? A little much or just right??

Texture Snapshot

Found this image via Fric & Frac the other day.
While that post was on something entirely different,
I am sharing this image solely on the basis of the great composition and texture!

Of couse I love the pink cherry blossoms on the branches, the shell (or is it coral?) and the open weave basket....

What do you think? Do you decorate small areas in your house, make vignettes?

I have a friend (hi MB) that, just like I do, have a "supply cabinet". In fact she has told me that when building her house, a decision to move the a/c unit out into the garage was made, so to make room for the said supplies. When attending functions at her house, I always wondered how it often looked different... until she showed me her "stash"!

In real estate the slogan goes something like "location, location...", well, how about "rotation, rotation", when dealing with interiors? A great way to make what you already own look new again!!

Now, I do not have a lot of storage in my little home, but with my new kitchen comes an additional row of three, double cabinets. I am looking forward to unpacking boxes from the attic, and starting the vignettes!

Happy decorating!

Un-related beauty

... does that even make sense?
Anyhoooo, just sharing two super pretty detailed shots, hope you think they are as pretty as I do?!

Do you recall this post? Well, as a reader of Northern Light, I am sure you are aware that I have a new found love for Sea Fans! This little saltwater display just made me smile :) The sea urchin and the sand dollar are so pretty, love all the texture and different whites!

Speaking of texture...
Nothing like an old french church candelabra, though I am not sure if they are a little passe or not? That's it for today folks, super busy week, please be patient...

Welcome to new readers, and if you didn't "Like" Northern Light on FB, what are you waiting for? Click on the link to the right, and voila :)

White done right!

I get so happy when I come across a space like this!!

Not only has it been photographed beautifully, really showing the beautiful light filled rooms, but the interior has been done perfectly, at least in my humble opinion!!

This living room, with all it's white, still reads very cozy to me. I like how you get the sense of more space... when in the living room, look through the study, your eye travels to the bedroom. The rooms are infused with lot's of texture, older furniture - perhaps hand me downs - designer lighting (check out the Verner Panton lamp on the danish modern sideboard), travel finds (neck pieces) on stands, the rung in the bedroom.... wait till you see the rest of the house!!

Ethnic accessories creep in everywhere, and mingle so well with the all white interior!!

Framing a piece of cloth, is a great way to display  fragile textile! ... it breaks up the white wall, ties in the caramel velvet covered wing back chair and the beautiful organic coffee table(s) and bench. Notice how the old style chair by the window has been slip covered in white fabric. Great way to re-purpose furniture!!

Pocket doors keep the living room and the bedroom separate, yet keep the flow of the two spaces working well. What perhaps was an awkward little room before, has been united with the bedroom. The space now functioning as a study, making the transition between the two rooms less obvious. Imagine sitting at the old wood table, with a view of the garden.... I could be blogging from there, what about you?

Simple, clean, calm, uncluttered, white, beautiful... are some of the words that pop into my mind here.

Like the rest of the house, great ethnic infusion with the wood Asian benches, and I love the contemporary lighting (Tolomero bed side lamps). Keeping this space open to the living room, calls for a clutter free environment!!

A clean, modern bath room, in tune with the rest of the house. All you have to do is ad a few touched of texture... greenery, artwork and a necklace, artfully displayed! Voila!

Come join the party!
Heirlooms grace the table, and looking around the corner, a glimpse of the kitchen.

Great little eating area. Why keep your everyday tableware hidden, display it like here along with your cook books! Again, great lighting! White Poul Henningsen lamp above the table! The seating is not to shabby either ;), but I can't tell if the chairs are "the real deal" (read Arne Jacobsen Ant chair), but does that really matter anyway?

Another look of the kitchen, probably the "darkest" room in the house, but kept light in feel. The white marble counter tops, white glossy subway tiles as back splash, and the glass paneled door in the back, light is bouncing from surface to surface.

So, what do you think? "White done right!" , or not?
I hope you enjoyed this house tour!
