Occasionally I get an opportunity to read clinical trial results and see actual controlled before and after photos. For example, Dr. Nicholas Perricone’s book, The Perricone Prescription: A Physician's 28-Day Program for Total Body and Face Rejuvenation contains clinical trial photos of DMAE’s antiaging effect performed by Johnson and Johnson.
The J&J pictures are definitely not flattering and wouldn’t make good ad copy. They’re shot in controlled, straight-on lighting. The subjects’ heads are clamped into position so that the angle is exactly the same in each photo. Of course, the photos are really not retouched.
I wish they would feature some of the clinical trial photos in ads. But I guess if they did that, they’d have a hard time finding volunteers to test new products!
