This weird little product first appeared back with the Venomous Villains collection last Autumn. I picked it up on a whim but by the time I sat down to write about it the collection was pretty much over so I forgot about it. In typical MAC style though it’s being brought back and integrated into the permanent line this summer so I thought I should finally get my arse in gear and do a review. The good news is that the repromoted product won’t have Dr Facilier on the box which as you can see is a good thing.
So it’s basically a loose powder with a sifter and a twist off lid. A quick ask round on Twitter told me that this was around £19.50 (possibly much more though, it was a while ago) when I bought it but I suspect the price will go up this time round because, well, it’s MAC and they do tend to do that. Regardless of the high price you do get a whopping 24g of product which I know I’m never going to get through.
So what is it? Weird, that’s what. It has a really high water content so although it acts and looks like a powder it feels like your splashing water on your skin. This particular shade, Truth & Light, is a pale gold shimmer. There are tiny flecks of sparkle but it isn’t unbearable. On my pale skin it translates as a subtle highlight. I’ve heard some people say you could use this all over but personally I think it would leave me looking like a disco ball that’s been dropped in a chip pan so I’ll keep it to the cheek bones. Maybe if you have dry skin it might work all over.
The thing is though that I can’t help but feel like I bought a gimmick. It’s ok as a highlighter but I don’t reach for it often enough to justify the expense. Maybe I’ll use it more when the weather heats up as it does feel very refreshing on the skin. One thing to bear in mind though is that if you apply too much is can sort of ball up on the skin and take some work to smooth out. I use a light hand and a fluffy brush for an even application.
There are three shades being released around in May. Truth & Light, Cajun (a more bronzey shade) (both of which are re-promotes from VV) and Honey Rose (pinkish beige apparently though I haven’t seen it). Will you be picking any up? X
